چکیده
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) , a new methodology based on linear programming concepts, provides an approach to evaluate relative technical efficiency of nonprofit organizations 1) which have multiple outputs and inputs and 2) where the efficient production function is not specifiable with precision. This paper evaluates the reliability of DEA, compared with use of ratio analysis and basic regression analysis for efficiency measurement. DEA, ratio analysis, and regression analysis are applied to an artificial data, in which the efficient and inefficient units are known. Without knowledge of the technology, DEA accurately identifies certain inefficient Decision Making units (DMU's) when outputs and input are properly specified. In contrast, the ratio analysis and regression analysis techniques are found to be less reliable for identifying inefficient DMU's. The strengths and limitations of DEA are further elaborated to anticipate issues that may arise in subsequent field applications. Acknowledgement. The author most gratefully acknowledges the beneficial guidance and careful reading of early versions of this manuscript by his thesis advisor, W. W. Cooper. His thoughtful comments were most appreciated. In addition, the redirection of the original version suggested by Arie Lewin and the insights of the reviewers have been extremely helpful in developing the authors understanding of and insights about this research.

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a linear programming based technique that was developed to evaluate relative efficiency of nonprofit and public sector Decision Making Units (DMU's) that use multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. In this study, DEA is evaluated and tested for use as a managerial audit tool to identify and measure inefficiencies among a set of DI'IU's. Based on three app...
متن کاملClassifying inputs and outputs in interval data envelopment analysis
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is an approach to measure the relative efficiency of decision-making units with multiple inputs and multiple outputs using mathematical programming. In the traditional DEA, it is assumed that we know the input or output role of each performance measure. But in some situations, the type of performance measure is unknown. These performance measures are called flexi...

Evaluation of performance and productivity is among the fundamental concepts inmanagement. In order to achieve their goals, organizations must evaluate theirperformance. One of the important stages of performance appraisal is evaluation oforganization’s efficiency. Banks, financial and credit institutions are among the mostimportant organizations of every economic system, because every activity...

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) , a new methodology based on linear programming concepts, provides an approach to evaluate the relative technical efficiency of nonprofit organizations which have multiple inputs and outputs. This approach potentially will identify inefficient units and the magnitude of the inefficiency to provide a basis to select inefficient units for management review or effic...
متن کاملIdentification of Multiple Input-multiple Output Non-linear System Cement Rotary Kiln using Stochastic Gradient-based Rough-neural Network
Because of the existing interactions among the variables of a multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) nonlinear system, its identification is a difficult task, particularly in the presence of uncertainties. Cement rotary kiln (CRK) is a MIMO nonlinear system in the cement factory with a complicated mechanism and uncertain disturbances. The identification of CRK is very important for different pur...
